On Design
When I design furniture and cabinets I utilize a decision making process in which the size, shape, and level of detail for each component is determined step by step in light of its effect on the whole. Through repeated application of this decision making process, many strong, yet simple, visual centers begin to come to life. When the process is complete, there is a multiplicity of visual centers that will satisfy deeply for many years to come.
Sketches are always a good starting point for any design. A good sense of proportion often results from the first or second sketch and many details can be explored quickly with rough sketches. Larger scale drawings and mock-ups are also useful.
Some details will often be refined during construction when proportions, sizes of various parts, and subtile shadow lines can be fully appreciated.
